When it comes to commercial gate automation and access control systems, there is one lesson I have learned after nearly 17 years in this specialized industry: doing the job right the first time is almost always the least expensive option.

For example, an installer may install an operator rated for 1,800 pounds on an 1,800-pound gate and believe the job is complete.

On paper, that may seem correct.

In the real world, it isn’t.

Wind becomes an enormous factor.

A solid steel gate acts like a giant sail. Every gust of wind dramatically increases the amount of force the operator must overcome. Instead of simply moving the gate’s weight, the operator must now fight wind resistance while accelerating and decelerating thousands of pounds of moving steel.

The result is excessive strain on the motor, gearbox, RPM monitoring system, and internal electronics.

Eventually, the operator begins faulting, shutting down, or failing altogether.

The customer is left wondering why their “new” gate system constantly has problems.

Proper Geometry Is Just as Important

Even when the correct operator is selected, improper installation can destroy it.

Gate operators are engineered around very specific mounting dimensions and arm geometry established by the manufacturer.

If an operator is mounted too close, too far away, too high, too low, or at the wrong angle, the mechanical advantage changes dramatically.

The operator must work much harder every time the gate opens and closes.

That extra strain may not be noticeable on day one.

It may not even be noticeable after six months.

But after thousands of operating cycles, the excessive stress significantly shortens the life of the equipment.

I’ve seen operators fail after only a year or two—not because they were defective, but because they were never installed according to the manufacturer’s installation manual.

Temporary Success Isn’t Long-Term Quality

Sometimes a contractor installs a system on a calm day.

Everything works perfectly.

The owner receives the keys.

Everyone is happy.

Then the first windy week arrives.

The gate begins faulting.

Unfortunately, I’ve heard people in this industry say that as long as the gate makes it through the warranty period, they’ve done their job.

I couldn’t disagree more.
