What Is a Ground Induction Loop?

A ground induction loop, also called a vehicle detection loop or inductive loop, is a series of insulated copper wires installed beneath asphalt or concrete. The wire is carefully wound into a specific pattern and connected to an electronic loop detector inside the gate operator.

When electrical current flows through the loop, it creates an electromagnetic field. As a vehicle drives over the loop, the metal in the vehicle changes that magnetic field. The loop detector recognizes this change and signals the gate operator that a vehicle is present.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that automated gates use a pressure plate buried underground. They do not. There is no pressure plate. Instead, the system relies entirely on changes in the electromagnetic field created by the induction loop.

This detection system tells the gate operator that a vehicle is occupying the gate area, preventing the gate from closing on the vehicle and allowing it to operate safely.

Why Do Automatic Gates Get Stuck Open?

A properly functioning ground loop protects vehicles from being struck by the gate. However, when the loop becomes damaged, the gate operator may falsely believe that a vehicle is constantly sitting on the loop.

When this happens, the gate will remain in the open position as a safety precaution.

This is one of the most common reasons automated gates become stuck open, especially during the hot summer months in Southern Nevada.

Why Do Ground Induction Loops Fail?

Most ground loops are installed by saw-cutting grooves into asphalt and placing the loop wire inside before sealing it with commercial-grade sealant.

Over time, asphalt is constantly expanding and contracting due to temperature changes. In Las Vegas, where pavement temperatures can exceed 160°F during the summer, this movement becomes significant.

As the asphalt moves year after year, it slowly stretches and stresses the buried wire.

Eventually, this causes:

• Broken copper conductors inside the wire
• Cracked or damaged wire insulation
• Water intrusion into the loop
• Weak or inconsistent electromagnetic signals
• Complete loop failure

Once enough of the wire is damaged, the loop detector can no longer accurately determine whether a vehicle is present. In many cases, it interprets the damaged loop as a constant vehicle detection, forcing the automatic gate to remain open.

Why Some Motorcycles Don’t Trigger Automatic Gates

Another issue we occasionally see involves motorcycles.

Many sport bikes contain large amounts of aluminum and relatively little steel. Because induction loops detect changes in magnetic fields created by metal, some motorcycles simply do not contain enough ferrous metal to activate the loop.

This can leave riders waiting at the gate without triggering the operator.

While modern loop detectors can often be adjusted for greater sensitivity, not every installation is capable of reliably detecting lightweight motorcycles.

Can a Ground Loop Be Repaired?

Sometimes.

If the damage is minor, a trained gate technician may be able to temporarily restore operation by adjusting the sensitivity of the loop detector located inside the gate operator cabinet.

Increasing the detector’s sensitivity can compensate for a weakening signal and extend the life of the existing loop.

However, this is only a temporary solution.

The permanent repair is to remove the failed loop and install a new induction loop by:

• Saw-cutting new grooves into the asphalt or concrete
• Installing new loop wire
• Properly twisting and terminating the loop leads
• Connecting the new loop to the detector
• Sealing the saw cuts with commercial-grade roadway sealant
• Testing and calibrating the detector for proper operation

Don’t Attempt to Adjust the Loop Yourself

Although adjusting a loop detector may seem simple, it should only be performed by a qualified gate automation technician.

Improper sensitivity settings can create dangerous conditions. If the detector becomes too insensitive, the gate may fail to recognize a vehicle. If it becomes too sensitive, it may detect nearby vehicles or false signals, causing nuisance operation.

Vehicle damage from an improperly adjusted safety system can be extremely costly, which is why these settings should always be left to experienced professionals.
